My Story
I originally come from a conservative Christian household in the Midwest where my family instilled in me the belief that liberal ideas were unacceptable and being a part of the LGBTQIA+ community was both sinful and shameful. During my teenage years, I became aware of my "differences," but the fear and stigma instilled by my upbringing compelled me to conceal that aspect of my identity.
In my teens, I began to sense an incompleteness in my life, prompting me to search for something elusive. This quest led me to stumble upon the BDSM community through a chance encounter with a science fiction book as I transitioned into adulthood and gained the freedom to explore such interests.
Discovering the BDSM community opened doors for me to delve deeper into understanding and embracing the LGBTQIA+ community. Attending LGBTQIA+ events provided me with an overwhelming sense of support, belonging, and acceptance that I had never experienced before. It felt like I was part of a collective journey towards self-discovery and authenticity, where everyone offered space and encouragement for individuals to explore their true selves.
Since embracing this community as my own, I have been fortunate to connect with people who have enabled me to live authentically and fully. Their boundless passion and love for others have deeply touched me, fostering a profound love for my community. It helped me accept my existence as a pansexual and polyamorous self. It took me 24 years to find my place and say the words out-loud. Stepping up at a gay leather bar to an older butch lesbian who went by the moniker, Tex Butch, I spoke my truth into existence and cried as I felt the wave of relief, validation, and stress of hiding my true self finally be pulled back. It was a moment that I will always treasure as my first step into my true self, and feeling the depth of connection with those around me.
Through this revelation, I noticed the trouble at the gates. I saw the progress forward that had been made and it was amazing to come into the community that had already achieved so much. However, I have also seen growing hostility and oppression against my community, particularly in my home state of Missouri. This resurgence of prejudice has fueled my determination to advocate for the safety and well-being of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Additionally, the loss of someone dear to me has forged a personal connection to mental health issues. Struggling with my own depression, I have become deeply committed to advocating for mental health within the LGBTQIA+ community, both for the benefit of others and for my own well-being. I am particularly driven to alleviate the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ youth in navigating their mental health journeys.
